Hi, I'm Alex - the runner and dietetics student behind Gatebreak Endurance.
I burned out after spending too many years glued to a screen, writing software and moving Jira tickets across a Kanban board. Along the way I built some cool things that abstractly helped a lot of people.
Now I prioritize tangibly helping people, because moving physical bodies through physical places is easier said than done.
I'm not an "elite" athlete. I didn't run competitively in high school or college. Instead I spend my youth and teenage years skateboarding. I took it way too seriously, cooking in the sun all summer long at a skatepark surrounded by corn and devoid of shade. Skateboarding serious builds character - failing is the norm, success the exception. But when it works out, it works out well, and I'm still chasing that flow state. I can still do a kickflip. I'm also much more fearful of concrete.
My interest in running started in a university anthropology department, with curiosity about persistence hunting and the metabolic strategies of the indigenous peoples. I'm taking that academic interest in a new direction, pursuing formal coursework in sports nutrition, on my way toward a Registered Dietitian credential, alongside my own training and racing.
I take "gatebreaking" to heart. The coursework, the self-study, and the miles are all happening at the same time. I'm building it in public, and welcome you to watching the process, rather than a polished result.
My approach is data-driven but grounded in real experience. I conduct 'n=1' self-studies to test protocols on myself first, whether it's fueling strategies for long trail runs or recovery nutrition after intense training sessions.
Whether you're tackling your first race or preparing for ultra-distances, I'm here to partner with you, build accountability, and share evidence-based guidance based on what works in the field.
